Income distribution in its many dimensions has been at the forefront of Malaysia’s economic and social policies at least since the advent of the New Economic Policy (NEP) in 1971. Broadly construed, the concern on inequality remains high among policy makers and the public at large in Malaysia. But one difference between the 1970s and today is that interest in and concern about income distribution is now a global phenomenon. Further, it is now recognised that in the era of globalisation, income distribution within a country cannot be viewed independently from global forces and trends. With this background, Khazanah Nasional Berhad and Khazanah Research Institute hosted a seminar on Malaysian Income Distribution in a Global Context. While the focus were on Malaysian trends and policies, these were set in the framework of broader global patterns, and the failures and successes of policies in other regions and other countries of the world. Cross-national global coordination failures and their impact on national income distribution policies were also discussed and assessed.
