On 24 June 2025, Khazanah Research Institute (KRI), together with the University of Leeds, University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), and the Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM), co-hosted a multi-stakeholder workshop on the UK-Malaysia Network for a Healthier Digital Food Environment. The workshop is part of a collaborative research initiative supported by the British Council’s International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF) and Akademi Sains Malaysia (ASM).

The digital food environment—which includes e-commerce platforms, food delivery services, and social media—plays an increasingly influential role in shaping food choices, dietary behaviours, and nutritional outcomes. There is a pressing need to understand and assess the impacts of the shifts in everyday food choices from physical places to digital spaces, and ensure policies keep pace with these changes.

Over 40 representatives from government, academia, health agencies, the food industry, digital platforms and civil society engaged in fruitful discussions to analyse Malaysia’s digital food environment and identify key gaps and opportunities. These insights will contribute to developing a comprehensive framework to guide future research, policy, and innovation to promote healthier digital food environments in Malaysia.
